I'm a big believer in personal style over following trends. I love fashion, but I think finding what suits you and what, most importantly, you actually like is so important. There's nothing worse than wearing something bang on trend that actually makes you feel as uncomfortable as the tall person in the front row of assembly because it's just not really you.
Feeling confident isn't about following a trend, it's about wearing whatever makes you feel good, whatever everyone else thinks. I feel like recently I've really discovered what works for me in terms of the kind of aesthetic I tend to go for (how pretentious can I get eh?) so I thought I'd share my tips on finding your personal style. It's fun, I promise.
Experiment | Unfortunately you're probably not going to find your personal style without making some mistakes along the way, but these will only help you to discover what you don't like, which can only be a good thing. Plus, experimenting with clothes is fun! Try on heaps of different styles and colours in fitting rooms, pin your girl crushes on Pinterest and mood board whatever your eyes are most drawn to. Working out what really makes you feel like yourself is extremely rewarding because imagine always feeling like your best self?!
Make trends work for you | If you really love a trend, but don't feel that it suits you, don't give up on it straight away. Not every trend is for everyone, but you might just need to find a different way to style it so it works for you or maybe even just discover that little bit of inner confidence you've had tucked away. I was about a year late to the pinafore trend because the classic denim/cord style wasn't really me, but eventually I found a dress that can double up as a pinafore that is.
Get inspired | I think reading style blogs has helped my own style so much because I'm constantly being inspired by new content. I'm able to keep my personal style refreshed by taking inspiration from others and I'm able to decide for myself whether new trends suit me or not. Pinterest and mood boards are your best friend.
Adapt and evolve | Your personal style is going to naturally change with time so it's not necessarily something that you 'find' and stick to; you can find the essence of your style, but there are always new trends coming along or new things you might want to try. Don't be scared to revisit things you've previously dismissed.
Don't think about it too much | This might be contradicting all of my above points, but I think the point where I really found my personal style was when I stopped thinking so much about what I was wearing. Personal style can come to you naturally because you'll automatically put on what feels good and right for you. As is usually the case with everything, trust your gut.
How did you find your personal style?

I found my personal style when I gave up trying to copy my friends. I'm all about cute floral dresses which is what I usually wear now!

DeleteThis is a great post, it took me years to find my personal style. I think the most important rule is not take it seriously and wear what suits you instead of what is in trend.
