What I've Been Reading, Watching And Listening To // August

The book 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' featuring an anonymous woman dressed in a green ballgown on the cover is laid on white bedsheets

This post is scheduled a little ahead of time (there is a slight possibility I may be busy with something else towards the end of August) so I may have read/watched a little more than this, but I'll just include it in next months roundup instead if it's worth talking about!

R E A D I N G :

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid // I feel very late to the party only just reading this book as I know it's been on recommendation lists for ages! Evelyn Hugo is a Hollywood icon and Monique Grant is writing her biography; the book follows both Evelyn's life (including her seven husbands) and the developing relationship between the two women. I read this so quickly and it definitely lived up to the hype; I rated it four stars.

One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson // This is the second book in Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series (I read the first one last month). I feel like this one took longer to really get started, but I still enjoyed it just as much as the first. I felt like this one was slightly more stereotypical in the way that everything fitted together, but I whizzed through it despite it being quite long.

The Mothers by Brit Bennett // I absolutely loved Brit Bennett's other novel (I even rated it five stars) and this one was great too. To begin with I thought the story was a bit weaker, but I really got into it; it's about a young girl who has an abortion and how the connection between her and the baby's father never quite goes away. It didn't quite earn five stars but it was a strong four!

Half A World Away by Mike Gayle // I love Mike Gayle books and this was one I hadn't read. It's about a half brother and sister who were separated in the care system as children who find each other again as adults. It was as good as I expected it to be, but it was quite a depressing read so I read it super quickly so it would be over! I still rated it four stars though.

A Watermelon, A Fish And A Bible by Christy Lefteri // I've read the other two Christy Lefteri books, but this one is actually her first. It follows a group of women, a Turkish soldier and an Englishman in London during the first few days of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. I really enjoyed it but it didn't quite get a five star rating like her other two, but I gave it a strong four!

W A T C H I N G :

Peaky Blinders / BBC // We've started this from the very beginning as we'd never seen it before so we have a lot of catching up to do! I find I have to be in a certain mood for it (hello lots of violence), but so far so good and we're enjoying it.

Uncoupled / Netflix // This is a very easy watch; it's definitely not the best series in the world, but it's perfect for those evenings where you just want to pop something easy on where you don't have to concentrate too hard. It's about a middle aged guy whose boyfriend leaves him with no explanation after seventeen years together and how he deals with the aftermath and becoming single for the first time in years.

L I S T E N I N G :

Is It Normal? // Spotify // I've mentioned this before when I first started listening to it, but seeing as this will be the last month I'll be listening I wanted to mention it again. It's a fab week by week pregnancy podcast and the episodes have become longer towards the end so they can go into more detail. The latest ones have given tonnes of unbiased information about lots of different birth options so it's really helpful for seeing everything very objectively!

  1. I've got uncoupled on my to watch list! It looks ideal for getting through the night feeds. Haha. We're also fans of Peaky Blinders over here too, although like you say I think you've got to be in the mood to watch it. I often find I struggle keeping up with what's going on, but I still really enjoy watching it. X
