What I've Been Reading, Watching And Listening To // May

Posted on: Sunday 29 May 2022

May has felt like such a lovely month; the weather has really picked up which has meant I've spent more time reading in the garden than just reading before bed (I managed five whole books this month!). We also had our holiday, which gave me a bit more opportunity than normal for reading too. Here's what I've been reading, watching and listening to this month:

R E A D I N G :

Resistance by Anita Shreve // Set in a small Belgian town during the Second World War, an American plane crashes in a field nearby and the injured pilot is quickly hidden in the house of Claire and her husband, who are aiding the resistance in the town and helping people escape before they are captured by the Germans. As well as setting a scenario of Belgium during the war, the novel follows the relationship between Claire and the pilot. I gave this four stars.

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo // Following the story of a family; a mother and father with four daughters, The Most Fun We Ever Had is set both in the current day where the daughters are adults and also intertwines the story of them growing up. Each character is built up really well and has completely different issues to bring to the table so it's a really interesting read. I read it on holiday and it makes a great holiday read! I gave it four stars.

A Life On Our Planet by David Attenborough // I love a book that gives me a bit of a kick up the bum to be more sustainable and kinder to the planet. I found this one pretty heavy in terms of the facts and figures; reading it basically makes you feel like we're all doomed (or at least our children are, which wasn't the best thing to read while pregnant), but there are also plenty of solutions (which unfortunately rely heavily on the bigger corporations and governments). It's definitely a good read if you want to find out just how urgent the crisis of our planet is, but maybe not one for before bed if you're a worrier!

Six by G.S. Locke // This was a very easy read; a thriller where the main character is trying to work out who's out for him and his childhood gang of friends. I read it really quickly because I just wanted to know the ending (plus it's got really short chapters, which for some reason makes me read quicker!) and I rated it four stars, which I was surprised at myself for actually!

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson // A story of love and race, I really enjoyed this and it was so well written. It was almost too well written for me; verging on a spoken word style at some points, which I don't really feel intelligent enough for! It was also written in the second person, which I felt worked most of the time, but could get a little confusing during dialogue.

W A T C H I N G :

Boiling Point / Netflix // We don't watch films very often, but were both really intrigued by this one as it was filmed in one shot! That fact alone makes it super interesting because you can't stop thinking about how talented all the cast and crew are. It's set in a restaurant kitchen and follows the events and stresses of a night of service. Stephen Graham plays the main character and anything with him in is always good!

Derry Girls / All4 // I was late to the party with Derry Girls, but I'm so glad we started watching it because it's hilarious. I'm not enjoying the newest series quite as much, maybe just because the humour tends to get a little samey after a while, but it's super easy watching and definitely one to lighten your mood after a long day at work.

The 1% Club / ITV // We don't often watch quiz shows, but stumbled across this one while channel hopping. The questions are so different from other quiz shows so it's our little guilty pleasure watch at the moment because we love playing along!

L I S T E N I N G :

Spotify Mixes // I've tended to listen to a lot of the tailor made Spotify mixes this month, the ones that are made up partly of music that you listen to a lot with some recommendations of similar artists mixed in there. It's my attempt to discover some new music and artists rather than always listening to the same old stuff!

  1. Oh my goodness I've been loving the 1% club! It's my guilty pleasure too. Some of the questions are SO frustrating. I'm also a sucker for a thriller so six sounds amazing!

  3. When I was back with Mum and Dad in the UK, we watched The 1% Club lots. Some of the questions were real head scratchers lol. I was telling my friend about one of the questions. There were a list of words and they seemed to have nothing in common but in the end it was the last 3 letters of each word were an abbreviation for a month name. So obvious when you know but sometimes finding the answer is a challenge.

  5. I like the sound of The Most Fun We Ever Had, I haven't read A Life On Our Planet but I do want to at some point - it's a bit annoying that it is so doom and gloom though. I was late to the party with Derry Girls too, it was very lighthearted so a tick from me! I haven't watched the 1% club but I love game shows so I'll definitely watch that sometime soon x
