What I've Been Reading, Watching And Listening To // July

Posted on: Sunday 31 July 2022

Carrying on with my trying to read as much as possible before the baby comes theme, I've managed five books again this month! Whether these posts will be worth writing from September onwards remains to be seen...

R E A D I N G :

The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin // After reading the first book in this series last month and not particularly enjoying it, I decided to give the second one a try before I gave up on them all (I've borrowed a book that has the first four in it). It's still very Game of Thrones vibes and I actually enjoyed this one more and definitely got through it quicker too, which is always a good sign. I'll probably carry on at least through the third one as I gave this one three stars.

The Glass House by Eve Chase // Following a fire in their home, a family and their nanny moves from London to the middle of a forest for the mother to try and recuperate after losing a baby. Set between current day and the 1970s the story becomes more complex when the young girl of the family discovers an abandoned baby outside the house. This was a nice easy read and I really enjoyed it, although I guessed a lot of the twists! I rated it four stars.

Where There's Muck, There's Bras by Kate Fox // This book is essentially a celebration of some lesser known, but very successful and influential Northern women across different times and areas from politics to music. I was expecting it to be funnier than it was as Fox is a comedian so to begin with I wasn't so sure, but once I got used to the fact that it was basically just an informative non-fiction book I really enjoyed it. I rated it three stars (I feel like my star ratings have been on the harsher side recently!)

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson // Life After Life by Kate Atkinson is one of my favourite books ever and I've since read another of hers too. This one is the first in a series (of four I think) about a detective, Jackson Brodie. The book starts with three historical murder/missing cases before introducing the main character as he starts to investigate each one. I really enjoyed this and it was one of those books where the ending all comes together so quickly; at one point I wondered how on earth it was all going to resolve with so few pages left! I rated it four stars.

And Away... by Bob Mortimer // It's not often I read an autobiography, but I bloody love Bob Mortimer so I knew I would love this. It's written pretty much exactly how he speaks so it's just as funny as he is in real life (well, on the telly), but it's not just a comedy book as he covers some pretty dark moments throughout his life and somehow manages to strike the balance of keeping 'real life' quite light hearted. Fun fact, I've played a ukulele gig at the same pub him and Vic Reeves started Big Night Out in. I rated it four stars.

W A T C H I N G :

Love Island / ITV2 // Okay, yes, I caved and started watching Love Island. I wasn't going to this year because we have far too much to do and I always feel like I'm wasting so much time watching it, but it's just so addictive!

Breeders / Sky // We watched and loved the first series of Breeders yonks ago and turns out in that time there's been two new series that we've managed to miss so we got on it immediately. It's a dark comedy about a young family and they're really short watchable episodes so basically it ticks every box for me!

L I S T E N I N G :

London Grammar // One of my all time favourite bands, and one that's always guaranteed to make me feel both motivated and calm at the same time, London Grammar have been on repeat for me this month to help me feel both motivated and calm about all the things we've still got left to do before the baby comes!

  1. I love the sound of the books you have read in July, I particularly like the sound of The Glass House! I haven't watched any Love Island series at all so I can't comment on that! x
