The Coffee Shop Guide // LEEDS CITY CENTRE

Posted on: Sunday 19 June 2022

I wrote a Hull coffee shop guide a couple of years ago now (all of those recommendations still stand!), but we've been living over Leeds way for nearly a year now and despite there being a lot more options over here (and therefore a fair amount that I haven't even tried) I wanted to try and write a similar guide for over here. I've kept the guide to the city centre, otherwise we'd be here all day (plus it leaves room for a separate guide to cover all the other gems further out!) So add the following to your 'to try' list if you haven't already been (and there may be another guide to come once I've sampled a few more!) I'm still in need of plenty of recommendations myself if you want to send them my way...

I F . . .  // There are three IF cafes across the centre of Leeds; one on Call Lane, one on York Place and a small takeaway outside Kirkgate Market. I discovered it when we did a pop-up market for Nova Co. in the York Place branch and I think the relaxed vibe of that one remains my favourite. The coffee is good, the food (including the cakes) is delicious and the decor just makes me feel calm.

L A  B O T T E G A  M I L A N E S E  //  This is probably on every coffee shop recommendation list for Leeds. It's extremely popular and always very busy so for that reason I prefer this as a takeout option. The coffee is really good and there are plenty of tasty Italian treats to choose from too.

T I L E D  H A L L  C A F E  //  Located within Leeds Art Gallery, the Tiled Hall cafe is well worth a visit simply for the aesthetic. As you may have guessed, it's a huge tiled hall and there's plenty of greenery around to compliment the space, as well as huge windows letting light flood in. Visit for the 'gram, if for nothing else!

M O O S E  C O F F E E  //  Moose is really more of a breakfast/lunch and coffee place rather than somewhere you'd just go for coffee and it gets fairly busy; I wouldn't say you necessarily need to book, but be prepared for a bit of a wait if you don't. If you do have to wait though, it's worth it! There is so much on the menu (including plenty of veggie and vegan options) and the food is amazing. Oh and the coffee is good too!

K A P O W  C O F F E E // There are two branches of Kapow, although I've only visited the Thornton's Arcade branch. The coffee is just really good and pretty much exactly how I like it (small, strong and immediate drinking temperature). The brownies are excellent too!

And I'm sure there are plenty more to be added to this list so do let me know if you can think of anywhere else I should try!
