What I've Been Reading, Watching And Listening To // March

Posted on: Monday 4 April 2022

March has felt really busy, but I still seem to have managed to fit in a fair bit of reading and welcomed back a bit of trashy telly (I can only be sophisticated up to a point). Here's what I read, watched and listened to over the month:

R E A D I N G :

Women Don't Owe You Pretty by Florence Given // I bought this because I really liked the pretty cover and it sounded like a fairly good concept for a book. I really didn't enjoy it. I found it very basic and there wasn't really anything in it that I didn't already know. It felt more like a book about the author's own life than anything else and I've since read some reviews that say it's actually very similar to Chidera Eggerue's 'What A Time To Be Alone', leading to criticism that this is a white woman copying something a black woman has already done for her own monetary gain (I can't really comment on this because I've not read the latter). But basically, don't bother.

Where My Heart Used To Beat by Sebastian Faulks // This was a fairly interesting read, something a little different and I got through it fairly quickly. It's about a man who is almost forced to start looking back on his past, which includes a lost love, fighting in World War II and his career as a psychiatrist. Annoyingly, I could tell it was written by a man by the way he wrote about women, which is something that always grinds my gears a little and was always on my mind when I was reading it and probably overshadowed my opinion of the book. I gave it three stars.

Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro // This was the March read for my book club and it follows the life of Klara, an 'artificial friend' as she integrates into the family she is bought by. I really loved the concept, but there were parts of it I felt were a little unexplained and it dragged a little towards the end without any extra substance being added. At the beginning I would have predicted I'd be giving it four stars, but in the end I rated it three. An interesting read though!

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman // Second in the Richard Osman series, this book follows the same group of friends in a retirement village, but with a different mystery to solve. This one is more complex and definitely has a bit more to it so I enjoyed this book even more than the first. I rated it four stars and am looking forward to the third one coming out later this year now!

W A T C H I N G :

Love Is Blind / Netflix // Well my not watching trashy telly phase lasted about a month...I succumbed to the hype of Love Is Blind and was absolutely hooked. Perfect for watching with a lazy breakfast when you don't want to concentrate; watching people declare their undying love for each other through a wall never fails to make me chuckle.

Celebrity Hunted / All4 // Not quite as trashy as the above, but not exactly high brow, we've been watching Celebrity Hunted for a bit of light relief in the evenings. It's felt like a really busy month, both literally and mentally, so I think we've both just wanted to watch something easy!

The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window / Netflix // I mentioned this one last month, but we were only halfway through so thought I would update you with my final thoughts! We definitely got more into it and got used to the tone of the series as it went along. I actually guessed the ending fairly early on and we were pretty hooked by the end!

L I S T E N I N G :

Is It Normal? // This is a pregnancy podcast by Jessie Ware, recorded while she was pregnant and it takes you through the different weeks/stages of pregnancy. I wish I'd started listening to it earlier because I missed pretty much the whole first trimester (and don't really see the point of catching up now!) but I'm loving hearing/reading/watching anything from anyone in the same boat as me right now!

The Dropout // This podcast tells the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranose, the company she set up that was supposedly developing a miracle blood test that in a single finger prick could diagnose a whole host of diseases. It eventually came out that the whole thing was essentially a scam so this delves into the company, interviewing people who worked there and questioned Elizabeth's work at the time.

What are your recommendations from the last month?

  1. The dropout sounds interesting. I've heard a bit about the story, and it's crazy just how far she got on a lie. It'd be super interesting to hear interviews from people who worked there, so I'm checking that out for sure xx

I'm dissapointed you didn't like Women Don't Owe You Pretty, I've never read it..but I have gotten it for people for their birthdays hahaha as I liked the premise like you, but hopefully they like it ;) I do find those sorts of books though quite difficult, they to me are a bit like self help/motivational books I just can't get into them! xx
