I'm Pregnant(!) // First Trimester Diaries

Posted on: Sunday 6 March 2022

There's currently a tiny human the size of an apple (or so says my app) growing inside me. Yep, I'm pregnant. I still haven't really got used to saying it, and it feels just as odd writing it down.

I know pregnancy/baby content isn't for everyone, but I don't really ever go through anything in my life without writing about it so there will be a little bit here and there, starting with this; a little diary of my first trimester. I'm now 15 weeks pregnant so thankfully into my second trimester, which definitely seems to be being a little bit kinder to me. I wrote some very raw diaries while in my first trimester and I won't be sharing them exactly as I wrote them because I decided they were a little too moany/dark/badly written, so the following is a shortened, lighter version!

6th January 2022 - six weeks pregnant

I feel like I should have started writing about my pregnancy sooner, but I spent the first week living in this little happy bubble and also not quite believing that I was. We found out on Christmas morning; I took a test purely so I could see whether I could have a drink on Christmas Day or not and it was excellent timing because our spirits were very much in need of lifting (Matthew had covid). It was also super nice to tell close family on Christmas Day, like an extra Christmas present!

After that first week of nice happy bubble-ness New Year's Day came round, which began my sixth week of pregnancy. And the sickness hit. I don't feel like people really speak that much about the first trimester, obviously because by the time most people announce their pregnancy that's been and gone, but someone could have warned me surely?!

So, here's the warning that I wish I had, although morning sickness is different for everyone, for me it is constant nausea, 24/7 apart from when I'm asleep (I do love being asleep at the moment). And it's making me really down (sorry Matthew). I feel really selfish for feeling down at a time when I should be super happy, but after some Googling (which I know you should never do, but I do) it seems this is a pretty normal way to feel in the first trimester. Get me to the second please!

11th January 2022 - seven weeks pregnant

I chatted to both my sister-in-law (who is 25 weeks pregnant) and my midwife this week (over the phone Covid-style), both of which improved my mood. It seems that the general consensus is that the first trimester is just generally horrible and is definitely heightened by the fact that you have to just pretend you're OK because nobody knows yet!

I'm currently carrying a little blueberry-sized baby in me and I'm currently convinced it's a girl with no real reasoning as to why, although we've decided we probably won't be finding out the sex until they're born because surprises are nice aren't they?

19th January 2022 - eight weeks pregnant

I'm well into week 8 and I'm definitely learning how to manage my sickness better. I'm eating little and often (and mostly beige) which seems to be helping!

We went for a private early scan this week, partly because I couldn't wait until 12 weeks to see if everything was OK and partly because I thought it might lift my mood (which it did). It was so lovely to see our little (currently) kidney bean sized baby and we were able to see the heartbeat flashing too.

24th January 2022 - nine weeks pregnant

Despite feeling pretty ropey sickness-wise this week so far, I'm managing to eat more variety, even including some healthy stuff, which makes me feel like I'm at least hopefully giving baby what it needs.

I'm getting a little impatient for the 12 week scan because I just want to reach that sort of safe point and then be able to tell everyone! We both told a couple of friends each last week, which was really nice and gave us a bit of excitement.

One thing I thought would be a nice pregnancy perk would be my boobs getting bigger, but turns out they're just painful and feel more swollen than anything else. It's glamorous this pregnancy lark.

1st February 2022 - ten weeks pregnant

I've felt horrendously sick this week and also been really tired (I didn't know it could reach a whole new level when I was already tired!) and I definitely haven't been much fun to be around! (NB I cut so many words out of this week's diary because it was so moangy).

8th February 2022 - eleven weeks pregnant

I'm definitely getting a little more respite from the morning sickness, but my acid reflux has upped it's game and by the end of the day that is horrendous.

We've both told a couple more friends this week, which has been really lovely. I'm definitely showing a little bit now and having to be more careful about what I wear so I can't wait until it's common knowledge and it doesn't matter if I look a bit obvious.

16th February 2022 - twelve weeks pregnant

We had our 12 week scan on Monday and it was so lovely. Everything is absolutely fine and we've got a right lively one on our hands! It was wriggling, kicking, waving, even pretty much leaping into the air! It was so lovely to see and really quite emotional. Also crazy to think that it's moving so much and I can't feel it yet.

22nd February 2022 - thirteen weeks pregnant

There seems to be varying views on whether 12 or 13 weeks is the last week of your first trimester, but seeing as I'm still feeling a little sick I'm popping this week in here! It's odd this week after having our scan last week because I feel like I just want to see the baby again and check they're ok!

I'm a little apprehensive about the lifting of covid restrictions this week, as I'm fiercely protective over the little life inside me, so I'll be laying low in terms of attending big events etc for the remainder of my pregnancy or at least until the figures are a lot lower (if they even carry on reporting those, which I guess they won't!).

Well done if you made it to the end of all that! Hopefully I'll work out a better format for the next post...

  1. I'm so glad to read this! I wrote diaries too and I published them after. I also felt sick ALL the time, it was awful! Coke and pizza helped me (I never drink coke usually!) but I had two cans a day (could have had more but tried to limit myself!). I found mints helped too, especially when smells were making it worse!

I cannot believe you are waiting to find out the gender! I want to know now haha.

    1. I just had to eat stuff like breadsticks and crackers all the time haha! I tried ginger but it seemed to make it worse despite what they say. Haha I'm actually really excited to have it as a surprise! xx

    2. I tried ginger too and it did nothing, then started to make me feel worse. Now I can't eat ginger as it reminds me of morning sickness!

  2. Congratulations! The first trimester is a really rough one - the things that would set me off changed day to day and although in most cases I got over it as soon as I gave birth I have a couple things that made me so horribly violently sick I still can't stand it now, things like what was my everyday perfume :( Thankfully my aversion to water came and went so I was still able to drink enough and I was eating green beans again the night after giving birth in the hospital thankfully - I love them but in my last pregnancy couldn't stand them for some weird reason!

My doctor was good - got all the anti-nausea meds I needed so I could kind of function until the second trimester arrived and I got my energy back!

Hope that your week is going well :)

    1. Thank you lovely! I'm so pleased to be into the second and feeling better! There are definitely going to be some things that stick (my partner's aftershave!). I had an aversion to water/drinking in general too, I actually found it harder than eating! Hope you're well :) x

The 2nd trimester was a breeze and flew by so I hope yours does too. Ohh and I found ice lollies / frozen drinks a lifesaver for the nausea x

  7. Congratulations lovely! I'm 26 weeks tomorrow with my second baby and I've got to say the first trimester is by far the worst. I still get tired now but the tiredness in first tri was definitely on another level! x
