I've spoken before (here) about how jewellery is just as much a part of the slow fashion movement as clothes and about how to start shopping for it more mindfully. And just as it's important to look after your clothes properly once you have them so they last as long as possible, it's important to learn how to look after your jewellery for exactly the same reason.

If I'm honest it's not something I'd given much thought to until recently especially as all the jewellery I'd previously bought was very cheap, but with my shifting mindset of buying to last over that throwaway culture life I've been looking at how I can look after what I do have and love it for a long time (regardless of how much it cost - everything deserves to be looked after properly!)

Don't get it wet // It's not so much the water that's bad, but you don't want to get any chemicals on your jewellery that may tarnish it so you should remove jewellery before showering, swimming, washing up, washing your hands or any other watery activity that may involve anything chemically! Equally you should remove rings if you're sanitising or moisturising your hands; even if the chemicals don't do any harm, they'll at least make your rings a little dirty!

Remove to avoid scratching // If you're doing any sort of activity that may result in scratching your jewellery - think exercising, DIY, cooking etc - then you should remove it beforehand. Gold in particular scratches very easily so if in doubt, take it off.

Store it correctly // Definitely not something I can preach about because I'm not actually the best at this myself, but ideally jewellery should be stored in a nicely lined jewellery box. It should be kept out of the sunlight and shouldn't be touching any other items of jewellery to avoid them scratching against each other. I currently keep mine in a cute little dish all together so this point is something I'm working on...

Learn how to clean it // There are different ways to clean your jewellery depending on the type of metal and if there are any stones etc in it, so I'd recommend checking the instructions or the website of where your jewellery is from to make sure you're cleaning it correctly. Alternatively there is plenty of info to be found from a quick google (I'm just not willing to give it here as I won't take responsibility for any mishaps...)

I've seen a fair bit of advice saying not to overwear your jewellery to help it last longer, but I firstly think that kind of defeats the point of buying it in the first place and also I, along with most people I know, have certain 'signature' items that I love to wear every day and I wouldn't ever discourage anyone from wearing something they love!

What do you do to care for your jewellery?
