(ad) Sustainable Bathroom Swaps

This post contains PR products, opinions my own.

Last year I read The Sustainable(ish) Living Guide, which is a fab read if you're looking to make some realistic and manageable sustainable swaps. In it, the author suggests doing a 'sustainability audit' of your house, one room at a time, ensuring that you don't get overwhelmed by trying to switch too much at once.

Although I wouldn't necessarily say I've done an audit as such, I've certainly been tackling the bathroom first, attempting to cut down on plastic bottles (although a lot of plastics can be recycled there are a lot of issues surrounding recycling plastic so essentially the less plastic you use in the first place, the better) as well as using products that are better for the environment and often purchased from small or local businesses.

So, without further ado, here are the swaps I've made so far:

Solid soap // I made the switch from shower gel to soap a couple of years ago and it's one of the easiest to make. Environmentally, you cut down massively on plastic especially if you make sure you're buying soap that comes in cardboard or paper packaging. I find that a bar of soap lasts a lot longer than a bottle of shower gel so you're saving money too. Plus there's so much choice of beautifully scented soap these days that I tend to feel cleaner too!

Shampoo & conditioner bars // I only recently made this switch so am yet to find a shampoo bar that fully suits my hair, but I love using them. As with solid soap, you're massively cutting down on plastic waste and there are so many options available now (even Morrisons do their own brand shampoo bars) so I'm sure I'll find the one for me soon!

Reusable face cloths & makeup removal // I stopped using cotton wool pads a long time ago and I now have some reusable face cloths for makeup removal and some reusable 'cotton wool' pads for removing nail varnish. After a few uses I simply pop them in the wash and they're good as new again! This is another switch that saves money as well as being environmentally friendly.

Deodorant // I started using Wild Deodorant at the end of last year and I'm a total convert. You buy a reusable case then refills which come in bamboo packaging that can be recycled (and breaks down a lot easier than plastic). The deodorant itself is all natural, something I was a little sceptical about at first, but despite the FAQs warning that you may experience a 'transition' period where you sweat a little more while your body gets used to it, I didn't have that at all and I've just smelt fresher than when I used non-natural deodorant.

Toothpaste // I was recently sent some toothpaste tabs by Parla. They're completely plastic free and although it takes a little while to get used to popping a tab in your mouth and chewing it about a bit, they actually work really well and I'm a fan so far!

Have you made any sustainable swaps in the bathroom?

  1. I like using reusable face cloths too, it's so much more sustainable and I get them in packs so I can have a couple whilst washing the others. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Not sure I could try toothpaste tabs but I do agree with you soap bars do seem to last a lot longer than shower gels and hand washes that are liquid soaps! It's good to cut out that plastic too :)

Hope that your week is going well :)

  3. Changing to soap is such a good ida! But I haven't found shampoo bar I can get on with. They just make my hair feel awful and I have to use a medicated shampoo because I have a rubbish scalp!
