Summer Wedding Style

Posted on: Sunday 2 July 2017

At the beginning of June one of my really good friends got married in the South of France - imagine the dreamiest wedding that could ever exist A.K.A. a beach, a jetty, the sea and the most amazing sunset I've ever seen and you're probably still not imagining quite how dreamy it was. It was a beautiful day and as we are well and truly into summer wedding season (and I am at that age now where people are suddenly all getting married) I thought I'd put together a little guide of how I chose my wedding outfit and beat all the common wedding dressing dilemmas that were whirring around my head because for once I was actually pretty happy with how my outfit turned out.

THE DRESS. A.K.A the main event. Obviously it doesn't have to be a dress, it could be a top and skirt combo, a jumpsuit or a top and trousers, it's your call. I always go for a dress mainly because it's easier to only have to pick one item of clothing (lazy girl dressing at its best). The dress I chose was this lilac lacy number from Asos. It's a colour I've never worn before or particularly even liked, but I absolutely loved it. The fit was perfect for me, the colour actually surprisingly suited me and the lace detailing made me feel ever so slightly Self Portrait esque, or at least like a wannabe.

THE SHOES AND BAG. In the Asos January sale I bought the cutest little silver bow slingback shoes with no real idea of when I would ever wear them, but they were so cute and only £12 so I couldn't not get them. As soon as I'd decided on my lilac dress I knew I wanted to wear my silver shoes. The hitch came when I was trying to find a bag to go with them. I challenge you to find a silver bag that's relatively cheap, small and not horrendously tacky. It's tricky. However I stumbled across this little gem in a vintage shop called The Magpie's Den in Hull and it was £4. Yes I said £4!

Onto my criteria for choosing a dress for a wedding; common dilemmas for me include:

How formal/informal do I go? Personally I don't like to look either over or under dressed, probably because I like to blend in and not draw any attention to myself. Generally the dress code will be specified on the invitation, but if not it's worth chatting with other people you know who are going to see what they're going for. If you don't know anyone I always think it's better to aim for over dressed rather than under because it's better to look like you've made too much of an effort than not enough!

How short is acceptable for a wedding? This is obviously completely subjective, but I don't like to go too short for a wedding, especially if it's in a church (I'm not quite sure why that makes a difference, but I always feel like I need to cover up a bit in a church!). I was slightly worried about the dress I chose for this wedding because the lace hem detail makes it appear shorter than it is so to put my mind at ease I asked the bride for her opinion. As long as the bride is cool with you wearing something short that's the main thing and it was the only opinion that mattered to me.

Ensuring I don't match the bridesmaids. I speak from experience. Matching the colour of the bridesmaids can be embarrassing. In the grand scheme of things, I'm sure it doesn't matter, but it's something I try to avoid so I always make sure I've confirmed the colour of their dresses before choosing my own.

Comfort. Weddings are long and they usually involve quite a lot of food and drink. Wearing something that you're comfortable in and that can accommodate said food and drink is a good idea otherwise you may end up wanting to take off your dress or at least undo the zip halfway through the day (apparently this isn't advised). I would usually also say make sure your shoes are comfortable, but in this instance there were flip flops provided for the dance floor (which was on the beach) so I didn't need to worry about shoes hurting!

Weather. In England, this is kind of difficult to take into consideration isn't it? You just don't know. In France it was slightly easier. I didn't even need to think about a cover up, but I chose a dress with little sleeves in case it got chillier in the evening. I wore my hair up because I knew it would be hot and I'd get neck sweat if I wore it down (TMI?). In England I would usually make sure I always had a cover up with me even if the forecast is good because you really never know in England do you?

What are your tips for dressing for a summer wedding?

  1. Firstly, you look so beautiful! The dress is gorgeous on you and your hair looks incredible. Secondly, THAT DREAMY FLOWER ARCH. Perfect photo setting, if only I had one of those just casually in the corner of my flat...anyway, totally know what you mean about choosing a dress as then it's only one item - I do the same. I always want to wear a top and skirt or top and trousers combo but I never allow enough time to actually find wedding-appropriate of both of those things that actually go together, so I always end up on a last minute dress dash!

  2. WOW this venue looks absolutely amazing! I totally agree with you here, this is the dreamiest wedding venue imaginable! You look stunning in the lilac dress, it suits you perfectly! I don't think your dress is too short at all, I think it's just right for a warm-weather wedding! A dancefloor on the beach sounds like the perfect way to end the day as well!

  4. That dress is simply stunning, every time I see it pop up on your Instagram I get serious envy!

Talking of bridesmaid matching your dress, one of my friends turned up to my wedding in the bridesmaid dress! HILARIOUS! I'd picked a dress from Chi Chi London forgetting that she's a big fan of the site .. whoever would have known she'd wear the same dress. I thought it was so funny and luckily so did she. It was a great talking point!
