Beauty Is Subjective And So Are Flaws

Posted on: Friday 22 July 2016

'Beauty is subjective' is a phrase I'm sure we've all heard and probably agree with to some extent - some people will find us beautiful and some will not. However it doesn't stop us thinking that a lot more people will find others attractive over us - a piece of art is subjective yet most people would rather have a Picasso hanging in their hallway than a Pollock (or so we think). Comparing ourselves to others is inevitable, but it's important to remember that the exact people you're comparing yourself to have self doubts and times that they consider themselves a Pollock too.

What I've never considered previously is that flaws are subjective as well as beauty. As a blogger who does outfit posts I'm forever scrutinising my appearance down to every last freckle in my photos and I'm sure most people can relate to that feeling of looking at yourself and being deeply unhappy with what you see. I've always had things about myself that I've disliked, yet recently I've come to understand that these 'flaws' are completely subjective and to many others aren't flaws at all. So essentially, flaws don't exist.

So the next time you're thinking about how much you hate your nose or that your thighs look fat (basically talking to myself here haha) remember that it's only you who see these 'flaws' that get you down so much and there are plenty of people who see those flaws as beautiful. It's difficult to change your mindset towards your body, but since realising that other people probably don't dislike my body as much as I do (or even give it a seconds thought for that matter) I've felt much happier. It's difficult to describe - I don't like my body any more than before, but I feel much more comfortable in it.

The only flaws you have are the ones you've created in your own head.

Do you agree with any of the above?

  2. Love this post hun, beauty really IS subjective and something I'm only coming to terms with with age and time. I always have to remind myself that everyone has flaws (although surely not for Victoria's secret models?!?! ahah) and it's not just me thinking like this!

  8. I agree totally! I usually like what people class as their flaws because it's something unique and quirky to them mostly. :)

  11. I agree with you, hun. Sometimes it is difficult to change our mind set, but it's important to accept the flaws we can't change as part of our own charm :)

  12. I totally agree with you, flaws are only in our heads - I always say to people, when they call me "smallie" I say it's not a flaw, it's just a characteristic! We all have characteristics, not flaws. I loved your pictures, you look very beautiful! Loved the top and the shoes! I had kind of a blog crash last week, back now! Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. Really inspiring words. It's so true that flaws are in our heads. I always worry that I look fat while all my friends told me I lost weight! It's a struggle sometimes but your post but it into words beautifully: body acceptance is so important :)
