Let's Stop Judging

Let's Stop Judging

Posted on: Wednesday 15 March 2017

This post has been a long time coming and is probably going to tumble out of me in an incoherent rant that's been building up in my head for a while now. I'm talking about judgementalism, which is most certainly not a word but I'm making it one for the sake of this post. The more I hear people judging others on the way they look/dress the more riled up I get about it. I realise that we choose the way we dress in order to create a certain impression so it could be argued that we're asking people to judge us, but I don't think that's true. I think we dress for ourselves, not for other people and although it's nice to receive a compliment on your outfit, it's certainly not nice to hear people judging you or others on your clothes.

The first time I got really angry about this was when I overheard a conversation about a man wearing green trousers. The people discussing this man (who completely unaware of the conversation he would cause, one day innocently decided to wear green trousers) were saying things like 'Why would he ever go out dressed like that?' and 'I don't know what goes through peoples' heads sometimes.' I'm guessing the reason he probably went out dressed like that was because he liked said green trousers. And what's wrong with that?

We all like different clothes and when I wear something I like I wouldn't expect people I don't even know to have a conversation about how awful my fashion choice was that day. But, as proved above, maybe I should expect that because that's obviously what people do. It makes me wonder what people must say about me and what I'm wearing when I'm not there and that thought makes me really paranoid and uncomfortable. I can't really act all high and mighty because did I say anything? No. And when people make comments about someone else's clothes to me do I say anything? Still no, I go awkwardly silent and uncomfortable. I'm not very good at speaking up when I should.

So maybe I don't speak up in person, but I'll say it on here instead. Don't judge people on superficial things like how they look and what they wear. Judge people on their actions because what they do and how they act actually shows who they are and what they're like, not anything else.

Do you get judged on the way you dress?

  2. I have definitely been judged on the way I dress before - one time when I went into sixth form wearing a bright pink skater skirt and black patterned tights, two of the girls in the year above me sneered as I walked past and whispered "SLUT" at a level that I could obviously hear! This really knocked my confidence but now I realise that what they did says more about them than it does about me! I 100% agree that judgemental Ian needs to stop!

  3. I love this look it really suits you. When it comes to being judging on clothing I've had my ups and downs, but in the end all that matters is you're happy with the way you are!

  5. Great post! We all should strive to be less judgmental. I have to say though, it's definitely difficult not to be judgmental in some situations, it's a matter of taking a step back and thinking before speaking. We may not be able to control every thought that appears in our mind but we certainly can control what comes out of our mouths! It's not worth hurting someone else over.

  6. Loved this!! I agree there are so many people that need a lesson in not being so judgmental!! When I was younger, at school, I definitely think it's something I was guilty of; not necessarily judging someone from their clothing choice, but just generally judging them by first meeting/appearance when I absolutely shouldn't have done! Now when someone I know does comment negatively on someone's outfit, I just tell them "at the end of the day, does that affect or concern you whatsoever? No, So leave it."

  7. I agree with this completely. Style is subjective, and people shouldn't judge others for it. What someone's wearing won't harm someone else. What's the point? Although I have been guilty of not wearing things that I love out of fear of judgement. I've got to stop that.

    This is an excellent post!

  11. I totally agree with you, I also write about that, that people judge others, but that is maybe due to what the fashion industry pushes poeple to (me can only wear black trousers or beige, jeans, gray) and also, from women who are that way, competitive. I really think we should wear whatever we want, we have this one life and that is so short, we have to wear what make us happy! If other people judge? That will happen, but then it's their problem, not ours. By the way, I loved your top :)

  12. This is such an important post, and where the saying don't judge book by it's cover really comes in. I think we're all a little guilty of it, but as long as we try not to and don't ever say negatives, we'll be okay. I agree with the person above - dress and appear how you personally want to, not for others, because at the end of the day the most important opinion for yourself is yourself.

Amazing post, I think you should do more like this as it really gets you thinking.

  13. I think this post is so true but I'm probably also guilty of questioning other people's choices. It's definitely true that we all have our own individual style and we should be allowed to express our individuality through our clothes if we want to. I'm trying to be much less judgmental of what people are wearing and accept that it's really nothing to do with me what other people choose to wear.

  15. Thank you so much for a post on this Amy! I can't bear it when people judge someone for what they look like or what they've chosen to wear, it's completely their own decision and it would be so boring if we all looked the same! It makes me so uncomfortable when people around me make comments like that.

  16. If I'm honest, I'm not too fussed about people judging others for me for things like how I decide to do my makeup and hair. What really gets my goat is when people make judgements on peoples body's or things they can't control. Like, saying someones swimming costume is a horrible colour is fine, but saying they don't have the figure for it is not fine.

  24. I'm very picky when it comes to clothes but if I see someone wearing an item I don't like, I tend to say that I don't like the item for myself but kudos to them for rocking it! I mean if we all dressed the same, the world would be dull! I'm a boring dresser; I stick to block colours and basics but that doesn't mean everyone should dress like me! If you want to wear crazy patterns, go for it! Like you said, we dress for ourselves not other people!
