Long Distance Friendship

Posted on: Sunday 24 July 2016

Everyone talks about how difficult long distance relationships are and I definitely agree with that, but a less talked about topic is long distance friendship, which can be equally hard to maintain. When you leave school or university and everyone disperses across the country (or sometimes even further) it's a real test and that's when you find out which friends are for life and which ones will just become a happy memory of your teenage years.

Last weekend I had another jolly to Glasgow where one of my best friends lives. I had the most perfect time. We didn't do anything particularly special, in fact we managed to watch an entire series of First Dates in two days, but to me that's what makes a real friendship - being able to do pretty much nothing in each other's company and still have a good time.

I'm going to do a complete U-turn three paragraphs into this post because I was planning on talking about the difficulties of long distance friendship (the 5 hour drive to Glasgow being up there) and how you can maintain them, but after writing that last paragraph I've realised something and instead of starting this post again I'm just going to go with it.

None of my long distance friendships are that difficult really - I mean obviously it's rubbish not seeing each other enough and not knowing every single detail of each other's lives like you maybe used to (that makes me sound like a creep but you know what I mean I hope), but essentially I guess long distance friendships are similar to long distance relationships in that as long as you both put in the effort they work. If they're really that difficult they're probably not worth it and that's why, sadly, people fizzle out of your life.

But the important ones stay, the ones who put in the same amount of effort as you, the ones you can pick up where you left off with and the ones whose company you genuinely enjoy without having to plan anything in particular.  The only thing that should be difficult is that you miss each other and there's not really anything you can do about that.

I don't know how to end this post now that I've gone off topic, but writing it all out has made me happy. In a way I'm glad we've all ended up moving away from each other because it helped me learn who's for keeps and who's worth putting in the effort for. In a way I also wish they'd all just moved to the same street as me so we could all pop over to each other's houses every day, but swings and roundabouts.

How do you deal with long distance friendships?

  1. They can be very difficult as naturally you see your friends less than you would a boyfriend and it's not just an evening here or there you have to carve out an entire weekend- but those weekends are the best if, like you say, you both make the effort to find them! :)

    1. Yes that's true and often people put more effort into seeing their boyfriend than their friends, but as you say as long as you both still put the effort in it works :) xx

  3. You're absolutely right, long distance friendship is easy if it involves two people who really want to stay friends and who put some effort into it. And it's a great feeling to have friends in different cities or even in different countries. One of of my best friends is from Ecuador and even though we only see each other every two years we still talk nearly every day and it somehow feels like I have only seen her yesterday xx

  5. This is a great post and surely less talked about. I think friendships do become difficult to maintain after college/uni but sometimes it's ok to let people go who weren't meant to stick around anyway & time really tells that. I like to keep the real ones close :) x

  7. I don't have any long distance friendships yet but I don't think that I would able to keep up. It's amazing that we have a lot of ways to communicate but not meeting up with someone for a long time would probably make me forget about them!

  8. I loved reading this post! I definitely agree, it takes both people to make the effort with long distance friendships but it really highlights how strong your relationship is when you haven't seen each other in a long time but it feels like you have never been apart when you meet up again!! xxxx

  9. I also feel the same thing. After finished college, my bff back to their city even one of them got married already. Long distance friendship is very hard, but I feel lucky because we still keep in touch and I also hope we can meet up soon :( Actually, this post makes me miss them though :( Anyway, I love it

  10. Such a lovely post - it sounds like you had a wonderful weekend with your bestie! True friends last the distance no matter where they live, it's so nice to know you can pick up the phone and they will always be there!

  11. I went through both long distance relationship and friendship! Surprisingly, people think that relationships are hard to maintain when in fact, long distance friendships are harder. With technology now, it is so easy to keep in touch with one another. like your said, it takes effort. Both parties must put in equal amounts of effort to keep the friendship going.

Thank god, my friends and i are still close even years of long distance.

    1. That's so nice you're still close! Friendships are harder in a way because you're always going to put the effort in for a relationship but not necessarily for a friendship! xx

  14. Such a great post, I was really looking forward to it when you mentioned it on Instagram because it instantly reminded me of some of my longdistance friends and how much I miss them! I think communication is the key to making it work, a few of my best friends live far away and I only get to see them once or twice a year but we're still as close as we used to be when we lived in the same city. It's hard but when people really care about each other, nothing is impossible! :)
